My name is Jörg Cassens. I am a lecturer and researcher in Media Informatics at the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Hildesheim, Germany. So what is Media Informatics? To me, this exciting sub-field of computer and information science combines aspects of core areas of computer science, in particular Human-Computer Interaction and Artificial Intelligence, with media technology and with insights, theories and methods from other disciplines, such as psychology, linguistics and semiotics.

We merge these aspects in human-centred processes to understand human behaviour, communication, work processes and leisure activities in order to design and build systems that support users in novel, non-obtrusive, contextualised, natural and culturally adequate ways.

My work deals with integrating intelligent systems into human environments with a focus on ambient intelligence, explainable AI, multimodal/multicodal interaction, learning and teaching systems, mobile computing, and pervasive games. My main research interests are the applicability of socio-technical theories for design processes and the usability of and user experience with intelligent systems.

I have worked on the development of intelligent systems that are capable of explaining their reasoning, on psychologically sound context models, and on requirements engineering methodologies for intelligent systems. In close collaboration with researchers at different research institutions and industry practitioners, we have developed behavioural interfaces, pervasive games, and novel learning and teaching support systems.

You will find pointers to my work on the different websites linked in the sidebar to the right (or the footer, if you happen to read this text on a narrow screen), or you can head to my lists of Publications and of Presentations on this website.
